Twice a month, Dr. Navin Mishra and his small team travel to remote villages in Nepal’s Dhanusha District. In this way, he treats approximately 2,200 patients per year from a catchment area of about 838,000 people. When pleural effusions, lymphadenopathy, or other TB-related findings are suspected, there is currently no way to perform ultrasound diagnostics on site.
Why This Is So Urgent
According to the World Health Organization, Nepal is among the countries with the highest tuberculosis burden worldwide—and Madhesh Province, where Dr. Mishra works, has the highest number of cases in the country. In particular, so-called extrapulmonary tuberculosis—such as pleural effusions or swollen lymph nodes—can often only be reliably diagnosed with ultrasound. Without this device, diseases go undetected or are treated too late.
What We Plan to Do
We plan to purchase a portable, battery-powered ultrasound machine – lightweight enough to take along on every outreach mission and equipped with two transducers that enable the specific examinations needed for TB diagnosis.
With your donation, you are not only making it possible to purchase this one device – you are ensuring that people in one of Nepal’s poorest regions, which is also one of the hardest hit by tuberculosis, finally receive the medical care they have been denied until now. Thank you very much for your support!
